Java Verified Program Sets The Gold Standard For Mobile Java Applications
Wireless Developers and Carriers Qualify and Market Mobile Java Applications with Java Powered Seal of Approval
SAN FRANCISCO - CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2004 - October 25, 2004 - Sun Microsystems Inc., the creator and leading advocate of Java technology, today highlighted the rapid adoption of the Java Verified Program among wireless developers as the standard for mobile Java application testing. Since the Java Verified Program's inception eight months ago, the number of tested applications to qualify for the Java Powered mark has grown at a rate of 55 percent month to month.
Application certification is central to establishing high-caliber mobile application services," said John Delaney, Principal Analyst at Ovum. "Ovum forecasts that by the end of this year, Java-enabled handsets will reach approximately 579 million worldwide; a 120 percent increase over the 264 million Java-enabled handsets connected at the end of 2003. As the market penetration of Java-enabled handsets increases, and Java applications continue to proliferate, carriers and developers will need to rely upon applications adhering to an agreed standard."
Many applications have been submitted and tested by the Java Verified Program, including:
Communology – Communology Instant Messenger combines instant messaging and presence services.
Concrete Software – Ace's Texas Hold'em is a popular poker game fun for all levels.
Sumea – Survivor allows players to join other castaways on a tropical island in this mobile game of the world-famous "Survivor" TV show.
UMOCO – Offers players eight challenging athletics events: sprint, hurdles, triple, long and high jump, discus, shot and skeet.
InfraWorld – Haunted Treasure action game brings players a thrilling action game full of fun and adventure.
Mediabricks AB – Mediabricks Media Viewer is a customizable application for provisioning of branded online media to mobile phones in a user friendly, speedy, rich and live fashion.
Mobile Diabetic Inc. – mDiabetic Creator is a mobile diabetes record management and carbohydrate system.
ReqWireless – WebViewer delivers a fast HTML Web browser for any Java cell phone.
Technology@hand Inc. – Shopping At Hand allows users to keep information about purchases, credit card and bank account names and available credit and balance.
Jsmart Technologies – Players need to save Betty Boop from being crushed by all the flowers from her admirers by arranging them into bouquets of three or more.
Xtremics – Missile Attack is a fast-paced action game based upon an old classic, brought up-to-date with awesome graphics and great animation.
"You haven't experienced anger until you have a teenager whose instant messaging client is on the fritz," said Frank Bell, CTO of Communology. "By promoting clear mobile Java standards and providing the Java Powered logo, both carriers and teenagers are assured of our product's quality."
"Developers have quickly learned that getting applications tested by the Java Verified Program dramatically increases their marketability to carriers," said Eric Chu, Director of J2ME Business and Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "Sun and its partners are extremely pleased to play a key role in facilitating important connections between developers and carriers eager to deploy revenue-enhancing mobile Java applications."
The Java Verified Program provides a unified process for cost-effectively testing and qualifying Java applications. Applications submitted to the Java Verified Program are qualified against a set of industry defined testing criteria at authorized testing houses worldwide. By qualifying their applications, developers can open a huge global market for their products.
"Our mDiabetic Creator is a rather atypical mobile application and we felt it was important to show it was created with industry standards in mind," said Scott Luse, Mobile Diabetic, Inc. "Diabetics across the globe will be able to access our life-changing application much sooner because carriers have confidence in our Java Powered application."
Starting January 2005, all Java applications must pass the Java Verified test before commercial distribution by most handset manufacturers like Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Aside from gaining popular support among developers, major wireless carriers worldwide including Orange and T-Mobile Europe have previously announced their participation of the program.
Launched in February 2004, the Java Verified program allows Java developers and content providers to monetize their applications more quickly and cost-effectively. Certified applications earn the right to leverage the Java Powered logo to provide customers with a unique quality assurance. Through the Java Verified program, developers can participate in marketing and distribution programs offered by Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and T-Mobile Europe.
