Game Boy Advance (GBA)

Game Boy Advance debuts in China

Mainland gamers in select markets get access to Game Boy Advance hardware and a limited library of games.

The Chinese market is no easy mark for foreign publishers and hardware makers. For years, Sony has plotted to introduce its PlayStation 2 console to the country's billion consumers, but it still hasn't been able to traverse the mountains of bureaucracy it has faced.

Nintendo, on the other hand, is apparently making progress where Sony has not. It introduced an N64 variant, called the iQue, last November, and yesterday, Nintendo's Chinese subsidiary (also called iQue) introduced the <EXTLINK href="http://www.ique.com/machine_GBA.asp">Game Boy Advance</EXTLINK> to gamers in Shanghai, as well as to other major markets in Canton Province.

A Nintendo of America spokesperson confirmed that "iQue will sell Game Boy Advance hardware with one game (localized in Chinese) at 698 yuan ($84.33) in certain regions in China." Reportedly, that one localized game is Made in Wario, known as WarioWare Inc.: Mega MicroGame$ outside Asia.

In Nintendo's annual corporate strategy conference, company president Satoru Iwata said Nintendo is planning on a three to four year buildup before fully entering the Chinese market. Yesterday's introduction of the GBA was the first step in that plan.

Rumor Control: Halo GBA and Dirty Harry: The Game

Also this week: $49.99 DS games, the third Mortal Kombat movie, and gay marriage, Fable-style.

RUMOR #1: Bungie is making a Halo game for the Game Boy Advance.

Source: Too many to count.

The official story: "We can officially lay that rumor to rest."--a post on the official Bungie <EXTLINK href="http://www.bungie.net/News/Story.aspx?link=A5A942B0-EA26-4422-A02A-50A45CAC0440">Web site</EXTLINK>.

What we heard: Last weekend forums were afire with word that Bungie was developing a version of Halo for the Game Boy Advance. Given the bitter GameCube/Xbox console war, a collaboration between Microsoft and Nintendo is "very unlikely," according to an <EXTLINK href="http://www.bungie.net/News/Story.aspx?link=A5A942B0-EA26-4422-A02A-50A45CAC0440">official denial</EXTLINK> by Bungie of the GBA Halo's existence. Still, the rumors persisted, fueled by "visual evidence:" screenshots of a professional-looking side-scrolling shooter (pictured) showing the master chief battling Covenant Grunts and Elites. In fact, a side-scroller called <EXTLINK href="http://www.consoletroopers.com/public/hbc/hbc_frameset.htm">Halo: Blood Covenant</EXTLINK> is being developed--by a group of amateurs for the PC. Motivated by its creators' desire to "recreate the old passion for those long-gone arcade platforms," the game is an unofficial tribute to Halo, and will be free once it is complete. However, that may be a while, since the 2D 'scroller is only being worked on part-time, and won't be ready "when it's done."

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus. The only way you can get a handheld Master Chief is by buying a Halo <EXTLINK href="http://shop.ecompanystore.com/bungie/BNG_ProductList.asp?CATALOG=BUNGIE&ID=4&TYPE=Actio n%20Figures">action figure</EXTLINK>.

RUMOR #2: DS Games will sell for $49.99 a pop--and won't be out until end of Q1 2005.

Source: EB Games' <EXTLINK href="http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/groups/nintendo_ds">Nintendo DS pre-order page</EXTLINK>.

The official story: "Nintendo has not made any official pricing or release announcements since E3."--Nintendo rep.

What we heard: Recently, EB Games began offering <EXTLINK href="http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/groups/nintendo_ds/">several DS titles</EXTLINK>--including Dynasty Warriors DS, Bomberman DS, Super Mario 64x4 DS, and the infamous Project Rub DS--on its Web site. However, the titles are listed as costing $49.99 apiece, some $20 more than the standard $29.99 Game Boy Advance game. EB also lists all the games as having a March 1, 2005 ship date--several months after the DS' planned Fall 2004 release. However, Nintendo-philes exasperated by the listing can take from the fact that it is all speculative. Nintendo reps confirmed that the company has not announced any specific DS games or price points, meaning none of EB's prices or list dates are official--yet.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus--for now.

RUMOR #3: A third Mortal Kombat movie is in works.

Source: Superb underground movie-info site <EXTLINK href="http://comingsoon.net/news.php?id=5163">Comingsoon.net</EXTLINK>.

The official story: "We've always been developing the idea of a third Mortal Kombat movie."--spokesperson for Threshold Entertainment, owner of the MK movie rights.

What we heard: Earlier this week, Comingsoon.net picked up two hints that a third Mortal Kombat movie was beginning pre-production. The first was a post on the <EXTLINK href="http://www.christopherlambert.org/currently.htm">official site</EXTLINK> of Christopher Lambert, the Ren Hoek-accented French-American actor who played Raiden in the first two Mortal Kombat films. "Christopher will once again take on the role of Rayden (sic) in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 3," read the post, which did not give specifics. The news was echoed by a <EXTLINK href="http://www.tvguide.com/soaps/qa/">TV Guide interview</EXTLINK> with Young and the Restless star Linden Ashby, who said "I'll be reprising my role as Johnny Cage [in MK3]. It's supposed to start shooting this summer." But, while Threshold Entertaiment's <EXTLINK href="http://www.mortalkombat.com/">Mortal Kombat movie page</EXTLINK> makes it look as though filming is imminent--it even has a poll over which major character will die in the MK3 movie--company spokespersons would not confirm when or even if it would begin.

Bogus or not bogus?: Probably not bogus. It's probably more of a question of whether MK3 will make it into theaters or go straight to video or the Sci-Fi Channel.

RUMOR #4: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is planning a game based on Dirty Harry.

Source: UK-based <EXTLINK href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=55791">Eurogamer</EXTLINK>.

The official story: "Can't comment."--a WBIE executive who would prefer to remain anonymous.

What we heard: Citing "British sources," the Eurogamer article says Warner Bros. has been actively recruiting developers to "make pitches for a Dirty Harry game." So far, according to Eurogamer, only two UK companies had given their pitches in full, meaning that the license to adapt the 1971 Clint Eastwood crime thriller should still be wide open. However, when contacted by GameSpot, an executive refused to acknowledge--or deny--the project was in the works, let alone which companies were in the running. But given the success of rogue-cop games like True Crime: Streets of L.A., the interest in the 1970s-set Grand Theft Auto that never materialized, and Warner's desire to leverage its movie properties, a Dirty Harry game must look very attractive. Certainly a better idea than a Godfather game, anyway.

Bogus or not bogus?: This punk is feeling lucky--probably not bogus.

RUMOR #5: Fable's story line will allow for gay marriage.

Source: A brief mention in the <EXTLINK href="http://www.lhtimes.com/community7.htm">Lionhead Times</EXTLINK>, the official newsletter of the Xbox RPG's developer.

The official story: "Gay marriage hasn't been dropped."--LHT article.

What we heard: Besides saying the mammoth RPG will have four different endings, include 22,000 lines of dialogue, and sport soccer games with severed heads, the LHT article mentions the gay-marriage option has been retained. That's right, gay marriage. A quick explanation: Since Fable follows a character from cradle to the grave, marriage has always been one aspect of the epic RPG. Apparently Peter Molyneux and the rest of the Lionhead crew thought it would add depth to allow for same-sex coupling--although it's unclear how, er, explicit martial relations will be depicted in the M-rated game. There's also a chance that it might not make it into the final version. "In these final stages the team has to make difficult decisions about certain features and if certain bits are left in as they are or completely cancelled," said the LHT article.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus--unless the Lionhead guys are having a laugh with an election-year, hot-potato issue.

GameBoy Advance.

Videos for GBA Unleashed in Japan

Japanese company am3 Inc., a joint venture of Toshiba and a handful of other companies, will begin selling videos this month for the Game Boy Advance. The first title for release is a Pokemon movie, “Pikachu’s Summer Vacation,” and the purchase price will include a connection device for playback.

In the US, publisher Majesco announced a device for the GBA a few weeks ago: the Wireless Link and Wireless Messenger, which enables GBA players to wirelessly join multiplayer games and allows for wireless messaging between devices, respectively.

While many of these features appear in the Nintendo DS—the latest Nintendo handheld console announced at E3, not yet on shelves—the add-on devices allow GBA players to reap some of the future advantages now.

GBA videophone coming to Japan

Cam-Pho Advance to allow videophone connection through the Game Boy Advance; available July 30.

TOKYO--Network solutions company Digital Act announced that it will release a new peripheral for the Japanese Game Boy Advance called the Cam-Pho Advance (short for Camera Phone Advance) at the end of July.

The Cam-Pho Advance uses a large game cartridge that comes equipped with an internal microcamera and analog modem, effectively turning the GBA into a videophone. When connected, the screen will show both the user and the person on the other end of the line. Communicating with another user is done with a speaker headphone that connects to the cartridge. The GBA's cross pad and buttons will be used to dial phone numbers and change the device's settings. It was originally going to operate off the battery power from the GBA, but it will now operate with its own AC adapter.

At 19,000 yen ($175), the Cam-Pho costs about one-fifth of the price of an average videophone system in Japan, although the specs are a little lower than average, with a frame rate of only five frames per second. Only 10,000 units of the peripheral will be released on July 30. They will be available only via online order at Digital Act's <extlink href="http://www.digitalact.co.jp/">Web site</extlink>.

Gameboy

<table align="center" background="images/bg.png" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td></td></tr></tbody></table>

September launch for new GBA Pokemon in Japan

Rob Fahey 09:46 13/07/2004
Huge franchise gets an Emerald addition this autumn

Nintendo is set to launch a new Pokemon game for the Game Boy Advance in Japan this September, with Pokemon Emerald set to carry on from the massively successful Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire titles.

Details of the title emerged in Japanese kids magazine CoroCoro Comic, which broke news of the new game in a recent issue, revealing that the game will once again feature the popular characters from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, along with a number of relatively minor changes to the gameplay.

Pokemon Emerald is set to arrive in Japan on September 16th, priced at the standard retail price of 4,800 yen (about 36 Euro) and will support Nintendo's GBA Wireless adapter hardware.

Despite claims from some quarters that the Pokemon franchise is running out of steam, Pokemon Emerald will follow in the footsteps of several hugely popular recent Pokemon titles. Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby sold very strongly in all global territories, while the recent GBA update of the original Game Boy titles, Pokemon Leaf Green and Pokemon Fire Red, also performed well.

The series' debut as a home console RPG also proved a huge success, with Pokemon Colosseum on the GameCube becoming one of the most popular titles yet for Nintendo's diminutive home platform.

No details of European or US launch plans for Pokemon Emerald have been announced as yet.
