По умолчанию Pokémon Emerald GBA SP coming to Japan

The limited-edition Rayquaza Game Boy Advance SP will be available in the Pokémon online shop in August.

TOKYO--To celebrate the upcoming Game Boy Advance game Pokémon Emerald, Nintendo will release a green limited-edition GBA SP in Japan. A silhouette of the Pokémon Rayquaza will be emblazoned on the flip-top cover and on the right bottom side of the controller panel. The device will match the game's packaging, which also features Rayquaza on its cover.

At 12,500 yen ($115), the limited-edition device will cost the same as any ordinary GBA SP, but it will be available only through Nintendo's online Pokémon store, <extlink href="http://www.pokemoncenter-online.com/special/emerald/index.html">Pokémon Center Online</extlink>. The site will be taking preorders from August 16 until September 10 or earlier if supplies run out. The Pokémon Emerald GBA SP will be shipped in the middle of September.

Pokémon Emerald for the GBA will be hitting Japanese stores on September 16 at the retail price of 4,800 yen ($44). The game comes included with the wireless adapter for the GBA, which separately costs 2,000 yen ($18). In this latest installment in the Pokémon series, the heroes, now dressed in smart green outfits, are once again up against the diabolical plans of Team Aqua and Team Magma, the villains of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Nintendo has not announced any plans to release the game nor the special-edition device in the US.

По умолчанию Nintendo to announce new F-Zero

Japanese retailers say Nintendo will release a new F-Zero game called F-Zero Climax on the GBA.

TOKYO--According to retailers in Japan, Nintendo will be unveiling a new F-Zero game for the Game Boy Advance next month, titled F-Zero Climax. The game is listed as one of the four titles scheduled to be on display at Nintendo’s next monthly product exhibit for distributors and retailers, which will take place during the first week of August.

Climax will become the latest game in the long line of futuristic racers, the most recent of which to be announced was F-Zero GP Legend for the GBA, slated for release in North America this September. The first F-Zero shipped for the Super Nintendo in 1990 and has since seen releases on all of Nintendo's subsequent consoles.

The other three games scheduled to be on display at next month's exhibit are Pokemon Emerald (GBA), Fire Emblem: Seima no Kouseki (GBA), and Zoids vs. III (GC). GameSpot will provide more information on the new F-Zero game as it becomes available.

По умолчанию Mobile games head to Austin conference

Women and mobile games expand the content at the second annual developer-centric Austin Games Conference in September.

The Game Initiative has added another track to its series of conferences to be held in Austin, Texas. The Mobile Game Conference will join the Women's Game Conference and the Austin Game Conference in Texas' capital city on September 9 and 10.

Like the other conferences, the MGC is designed for developers in the relatively young world of mobile games. Speakers will hail from the major companies in the sector, including phone manufacturers such as Nokia, service providers like Sprint and Cingular Wireless, and publishers such as Sony. Robert Tercek, industry veteran and executive vice president at wireless publisher Mforma, will deliver the keynote address, and GameSpot's own VP of mobile entertainment, Matthew Bellows, will moderate discussions on international markets and product development.

The AGC is only entering its second year, and with the addition of the Mobile Game Conference and Women's Game Conference, it is widely expanding from its previous online and multiplayer online content. See the MGC's official <extlink href="http://www.gameconference.com/mobile/">Web site</extlink> for more information on the event.

The background image hints that other characters, such as Sephiroth and Zack, may appear in the game as well. Beta testing of Before Crisis - Final Fantasy VII is scheduled to begin on August 31 in Japan for the NTT DoCoMo 900i series mobile phone.

По умолчанию Mobile voters crown Bejeweled at G-Phoria

Bejeweled Multiplayer was chosen as the best mobile game at this year's G-Phoria awards held in Los Angeles. Adapted from the addictive PopCap puzzle game and published by Jamdat, Bejeweled Mutliplayer is a lot like the original, except it includes the titular multiplayer mode and adds bombs that can be used against the other player. Players race against the clock to rearrange stacks of gems, matching colors and moving the board. Like other winning games at G-Phoria, Bejeweled Multiplayer was selected for the award by voters online.

По умолчанию Pixar strikes multigame deal with THQ

The publisher inks an agreement to make games based on four more computer-animated films from the computer-animation studio.

Following the multiplatform success of Finding Nemo the game and the multimillion dollar success of Finding Nemo the film, THQ and Pixar have struck a new game publishing deal.

Currently, the two companies have an agreement that will see THQ publish games based on Pixar's next two films, the superhero spoof The Incredibles and the automotive comedy Cars. Those two films also happen to be the last two films Pixar is making under its agreement with Disney, which fell apart earlier this year.

The new agreement between Pixar and THQ will start in 2006 with Pixar's first wholly owned feature film. It will cover that as-yet-unnamed movie and three more films from the computer-animation studio. The deal covers games for the PC, consoles, portables, and mobile phones in all international territories and is good for four years after each film's release.

По умолчанию King of Fighters '94 remake coming

The game that started the fighting series will be hitting an unannounced home console in Japan at the end of the year.

TOKYO--A King of Fighters '94 remake will be released on a home console within the year, according to the series' 10th-anniversary promotional Web site. The news came as SNK Playmore announced a new campaign where it will randomly give away figurines of KOF characters to people who purchase three KOF games that will be released in 2004. One of the three games listed is the aforementioned remake, due in December.

King of Fighters '94 is the only KOF title that hasn't been ported to a home console other than the NeoGeo AES. The KOF '94 remake will most likely be released on the PlayStation 2, considering that the game will be on DVD, and because the other two KOF games are also for the PS2.

The other two games in the promotion are: KOF: Maximum Impact (PS2), which was released just today; and the PS2 port of KOF 2003, which will be released on October 28 for 7,140 yen ($64). From February 1 to the end of March, players can send in three proof-of-purchase labels from the three games’ manuals to SNK Playmore. The figurines that will be given away are special-edition Pinky Street figures of Mai Shiranui and Athena Asamiya from the KOF series. Lucky winners will receive one of the two KOF Pinky Street figures in May.

Addtionally, SNK Playmore is now dropping hints that it will release a reproduction of the NeoGeo CD controller pad, most likely as a bonus for the KOF '94 remake. GameSpot will provide more information as it becomes available.

По умолчанию Metal Gear Acid site now live

Teaser site for Konami's anticipated PSP release ready for gamers, but it contains little new information.

TOKYO--This past weekend, Konami's <extlink href="http://www.konamijpn.com/products/mga/">teaser Web site</extlink> for Metal Gear Acid went live. The site currently features both English and Japanese sections, but the information on display is limited. In fact, the site currently only features the game's logo, a few screenshots, and the 3-month-old E3 trailer, as well as a comments submission form.

As revealed at E3, Metal Gear Acid will feature graphics similar to the PS2 game, but in the context of card-based strategic battles. You'll move hero Solid Snake around small cell-based maps, selecting cards that do such things as open fire on the enemy or allow you to hide inside a cardboard box.

Many of the available cards that have been revealed so far are based on items and characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games. For example, the Colonel Roy Campbell card lets you bomb a 5x5 area, and the Metal Gear Ray card lets you attack the five cells in front of Snake for 100 points of damage.

Cards fall into five categories: Action cards, such as the Best Shot card, allows you to kill an opponent with one hit; Item cards, such as body armor that can decrease damage; Support cards, such as Elude; Weapon cards, such as a SOCOM gun card that can do 10 points of damage without making a sound; and Character cards as mentioned above.

Metal Gear Acid takes place a while after Snake's retirement, suggesting that its setting is after the Metal Gear solid series. There is at least one new character that you'll be able to control: a girl with short blonde hair. While it's unknown if Metal Gear Acid will have voices, an illustration of the character that's speaking will be displayed on the screen whenever the game goes into event scenes.

По умолчанию N-Gage reaches million mark

Nokia promotes 1 million N-Gage handsets in the retail channel; mum on sales.

Nokia announced today that it has shipped 1 million N-Gages to retail locations around the globe. This figure represents the cumulative ship-in tally of the N-Gage and the N-Gage QD, not sales.

“Thanks to the enthusiastic consumer response to the N-Gage QD and [to] our latest titles, we’re confident that our success…will continue,” stated Ilkka Raiskinen in a statement. Nokia’s senior vice president of games then went on to celebrate the indoctrination of more than 100,000 Arena members worldwide, asserting that the success of the service “shows that gamers are inspired to connect and compete with other mobile gamers from around the globe.”

Nokia’s N-Gage Arena allows subscribers to compete in N-Gage games via GPRS multiplayer or online leaderboards. Additionally, the service is used as a vehicle for gaming contests and promotions.

A Nokia spokesperson elaborated on the sales figures, telling GameSpot, "This is the number that we've sold to our distributors and retailers, It's hard to give an exact number that are in consumers hands, but I can say that right now there is very little inventory in the sales channels and we are seeing steady reorders from our retail partners."

Nokia hopes to follow up on these successes with a strong holiday lineup of games, including the long-awaited WWII RTS Pathway to Glory and the fantasy MMOG Pocket Kingdom.

In North America, the QD is now available for Cingular and AT&T Wireless subscribers as well as T-Mobile customers.

По умолчанию Gizmondo to come equipped with Nvidia chipset

Rumors of an onboard 3D chipset prove to be true as Gizmondo touts Nvidia alliance in London.

LONDON--In the mobile market, convergence is, increasingly, the name of the game. The Gizmondo, which combines Windows CE functionality with high-end gaming, digital photography, and GPS awareness, has a chance to elevate this philosophy to new levels. In an interview today with GameSpot, Paul Hilton, Gizmondo’s head of games, confirmed rumors that his company's multifaceted device will come to market outfitted with an Nvidia 3D chipset.

Nvidia's brand-new SC10 3D accelerator will enable the Gizmondo to render 3D using dedicated hardware. Partnered with a graphics card to push polygons and draw textures, the Gizmondo’s 400MHZ ARM9 CPU will be free to crunch physics and game logic. In short, this results in better frame rates and higher graphical fidelity.

GameSpot was able to participate in a short demonstration of a revamped version of Fathammer’s Stuntcar Extreme, which nicely proved the above point. Using Fathammer’s new X-Forge 2 middleware, the game performed impressively, and it featured new lighting effects and a higher polygon count than that of its Zodiac predecessor.
