Miyamoto: DS wireless Internet a possibility

Nintendo's Miyamoto says third-party software could allow DS to connect to Internet through its wireless LAN.

TOKYO--In a recent interview conducted by staff at Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi’s Web site, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that it is technically possible for the DS to connect to the Internet using its wireless LAN…as long as a third party develops the appropriate software.

"We added the wireless LAN (IEEE802.11) to the DS mainly for the handhelds to communicate between each other," said Miyamoto. "But if someone releases appropriate software that allows it to connect to wireless LAN access points, it could also be used to connect to the Internet."

Miyamoto was quick to point out that Nintendo itself is not interested in developing the possible Internet capabilities of the DS. The company is focusing on gameplay rather than hardware capabilities and plans to make the machine enjoyable without the need for additional devices or peripherals. “The one thing we don’t want to do is to add this and that and every connection and capability [to the DS]. We want to make the DS enjoyable, by itself, as far as we can."

The full interview can be viewed in Japanese at Shigesato Itoi's <extlink href="http://www.1101.com/nintendo/miyamoto/index.html">Web site</extlink>.

Sony reveals PSP translation software, wireless multiplayer

Rob Fahey 11:52 13/07/2004
Tokyo conference throws up new details of forthcoming handheld

A number of new details about Sony's PlayStation Portable have been revealed, including the ability for up to 16 players to participate in wireless multiplayer games, and software called "Talkman" which translates between spoken languages.

Along with a number of new software titles and special editions of the PSP hardware, the new features were shown off at the PlayStation Meeting 2004 conference in Tokyo - although they were rather overshadowed by Ken Kutaragi's comments on the PS3, which we [reported on] yesterday.

The PlayStation Portable will be able to support up to 16 players in multiplayer games using the Wireless LAN link which is built into the console, it was revealed, with no "hub" hardware required for this functionality. It has previously been suggested that the system will also be able to play online multiplayer games when connected to a public Wireless LAN hot spot or a home Wireless LAN system, although this was not discussed at the conference.

The firm demonstrated a piece of software called Talkman, which utilises the built-in microphone port of the PSP and allows users to speak into the device in one language and have what they said translated into another, spoken, language. The software uses a cartoon bird as its main interface, which is able to converse in, and translate between, up to nine languages.

The demonstration at the conference only showed Talkman translating between Japanese and English, but the company suggested that in its final incarnation, the software will be extremely useful as both a foreign language training tool, and as a translation device for people abroad.

It's not clear whether it would be possible to use Talkman to translate real-time voice conversations between PSP users - a feature which was recently revealed for mobile phones by Toshiba.

A number of new software titles were also revealed for the platform at the conference - including Need for Speed from Electronic Arts, Harvest Moon from Marvelous and a title based on popular anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Retail reports indicate Nintendo DS pricing, launch date, software

Rob Fahey 16:18 14/07/2004
November 4th, 19,000 Yen (140 Euro), with five to six launch titles and 11 by 2005

Unconfirmed reports from Japanese retail sources suggest that Nintendo is planning to roll out the DS handheld on November 4th priced at 19,000 Yen (140 Euro), followed by a US launch on November 11th at $179.95 (145 Euro).

The same sources indicate that the Japanese launch of the handheld will be accompanied by five to six software titles, with Nintendo aiming to have 11 titles on the market by the end of 2004.

Nintendo reportedly aims to sell three million units of the Nintendo DS worldwide by the end of fiscal 2005 next March - a period which should encompass both the Japanese and US launches before Christmas, and the European launch in early 2005.

While these figures certainly seem plausible, it should be noted that Nintendo has issued no official confirmation of the launch date, price or software support for the Nintendo DS as yet; in fact, we're still not even sure what the DS will be called at retail, since Nintendo DS is still officially a codename, not a final product name.

The retail prices suggested in this report would almost certainly make the NDS significantly cheaper than the PlayStation Portable, which is expected to cost well over 30,000 Yen (220 Euro) when it arrives in Japan later this year, ahead of a US and European launch in 2005.

Earlier this week, a Nintendo spokesperson criticised the PSP in an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, arguing that the handheld could not be classified as a true video game system because of its integration of music and movie playback functions.

DS games to retail for 3,800 yen?

Muumuu president Yukihito Morikawa hints that games for the Nintendo DS will retail in Japan for 3,800 yen.

TOKYO--In a recent online diary entry on his company's <extlink href="http://www.muumuu.com/">Web site</extlink>, Muumuu president Yukihito Morikawa hinted that the retail price of Nintendo DS cartridges will be 3,800 yen ($35) in Japan. Since Muumuu is a third-party developer, the announcement is not an official release by Nintendo, and it is not known whether the price will be for all DS cartridges.

In his diary, Morikawa makes some critical statements about the price, saying that 3,800 yen per cartridge for the DS will be too expensive for some games and that it will limit the developers' freedom. Morikawa says that the DS’ hardware allows small but unique game ideas to be realized into a product at a low development cost. However, Morikawa continues, the developers won't be able to market those small games, because they can’t sell them at a lower price.

"I heard from a producer that a few DS projects going on in his company are deadlocked,” says Morikawa in his diary. “There are a lot of new things that can be done [with the touch-sensitive screen], such as making hand drawn characters fight with each other or transforming a 3D object with the use of the stylus. You can bang [in the game] with the stylus, dig holes, chip away things... it's easy to come up with those kinds of small ideas, and the DS is a superb hardware in that sense.”

"But, those kinds of ideas are too small to fit in a 3,800 yen cartridge, which is why [the developers] are deadlocked,” continues Morikawa. “It's difficult to expand on those types of small ideas, kind of like how a short story won't become a good novel if you bloat it up with unnecessary ideas. So the only way to fill a 3,800 yen cartridge is by stuffing in one huge idea or a lot of small ideas. But we can’t stuff in a bunch of small ideas, because that’s something which is already going to be done with Made in Wario [WarioWare, Inc. DS]."

Muumuu has developed a number of games for Sony Computer Entertainment, such as the Jumping Flash! series and Kuma Uta. The company is also currently developing an unannounced game for the Sony PSP, which Morikawa hints will feature a new gaming style.

EA to bring Sims franchise to Nintendo DS

Rob Fahey 11:03 16/07/2004
The Urbz joins Need for Speed in EA's catalogue of DS titles

Electronic Arts has announced that the next console evolution of the hugely popular Sims franchise, The Urbz: Sims in the City, is set to appear on the Nintendo DS around the time of the platform's launch in the USA this November.

The game, which is being co-developed for the DS by Griptonite Games, is the second title to be announced for the new Nintendo handheld by EA; the company's Need for Speed franchise was featured in the list of forthcoming titles for the system back at E3.

Reports from retailers earlier this week suggested that Nintendo will launch the DS in North America on November 11th at a price point of around $179.99, which would place The Urbz as a launch title for the new console - or as close as makes no difference.

The DS version of the game, which transports the Sims formula into a metropolitan environment, will use the touch screen for the menu system and will boast wireless multiplayer functions, as well as having the obligatory exclusive objects, characters, pets and mini-games.

EA has committed itself to supporting both the Nintendo DS and Sony's PSP, and has already announced a number of PSP titles including Need for Speed Underground, NBA Street, NFL Street and Tiger Woods Golf. No version of The Urbz has been announced for the Sony platform as yet, but it'd be pretty surprising if the game didn't appear on the system.

The Nintendo DS is expected to launch in Europe in Q1 2005, and although EA has made no mention of its plans for The Urbz in this territory, it seems likely that it will be a launch title for the platform here.

Nintendo passing on Space World, Tokyo Game Show

Once again, the game giant is forgoing expos; instead, it is planning a nationwide DS promotion in Japan.

TOKYO--In an interview with Nintendo Dream magazine, Nintendo spokesperson Mitsuaki Hagishima confirmed that the company will not hold a Space World event for the third year in a row. "We could have opened the Space World [this year], but holding a large event in one location makes it difficult for people from other regions to participate," Hagishima commented.

Space World was Nintendo's annual self-promotion convention in Japan, but has been on hold since the 2002 event was canceled. However, Hagishima promised it will be back on--someday. "It's not like we won't ever open a Space World event again. But we aren't going to hold one this summer," he told Nintendo Dream.

In a less surprising move, Nintendo will once again not exhibit at the Tokyo Game Show. (The game giant has skipped TGS entirely for several years running.) Instead, Nintendo is planning a nationwide promotion of its upcoming DS handheld game device. "We want as many of our fans in the country as possible to experience the DS before it goes on sale at the end of the year," said Hagishima. "So instead, we're currently planning an effective event that can be expanded to a nationwide scale."

Nintendo DS

<table align="center" background="images/bg.png" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td></td></tr></tbody></table>
