Sorrent Releases Second Annual Consumer Research Findings

Leading Publisher Reveals New Insight into Habits of Mobile Entertainment Users


NEW ORLEANS – March 14, 2005 – At CTIA Wireless 2005, the world’s largest wireless tradeshow, Sorrent, Inc., a leading creator and global publisher of mobile entertainment, shared preliminary results of its recent quantitative research aimed at profiling the population of mobile entertainment users in the United States. This is the second consecutive year for the study which broke new ground in 2004 dispelling myths and increasing understanding of the habits of mobile gamers. Sorrent partnered with research firm U30 Group to study the usage and purchasing behavior of consumers of mobile entertainment.

Among the research findings which will be released in greater detail in the coming weeks was the emergence of “tweens,” defined as youth ages 10 to 13 years old, as the market segment with greatest frequency of mobile gaming. In addition, results showed tweens as among the top segments in overall usage of mobile content.

Tweens: Generation Mobile

Tweens led mobile game usage in this year’s study with more than 84 percent playing mobile games one or more times per day. This compares to 64 percent of the general population of mobile gamers playing one or more times per day. In addition, nearly 80 percent of tweens play games on their phone while at home and more than 40 percent share mobile games and entertainment with family members and friends. Beyond gaming, Sorrent’s research found tweens to be active users of other mobile applications. 82 percent of tweens actively text message, 83 percent use ringtones and half of tweens surveyed use picture mail.

“For the generation growing up today with mobile phones, the phone is a lifeline to identity, community and entertainment,” said Jill Braff, vice president of marketing, Sorrent. “It can’t simply be thought of as another handheld gaming platform. Usage of ringtones and graphics, as well as entertainment, tells us that it’s part of young people’s lifestyle; a connection to everything that is important to them.”

More Results to Come

Sorrent’s consumer research explored several key areas of mobile entertainment, including 3D and multiplayer gaming, price elasticity, carrier preferences and buying behavior, as well as consumer preferences regarding brands.

“The mobile entertainment market is growing quickly and research is a key component to our success,” said Braff. “As a leader in the industry, Sorrent is committed to creating content that is relevant and compelling to the millions of wireless subscribers around the world.”

For this study, U30 executed 754 web-based surveys aimed at profiling the mobile consumer population in the United States. Respondents were evenly split across men and women and ranged in age from 10 - 35 years. Respondents were sampled from U30's double opted-in panel of consumers, geographically representative of the US. New prices help fuel consumer demand for mobile gaming


March 14, 2005 – Nokia today announced new pricing for N-Gage QD and games. The new price points are $99.99 prepaid for an N-Gage QD and $14.99 to $24.99 price tiers for N-Gage games.

“These new price points make it even easier to get your hands on an N-Gage QD and games to experience the thrill of mobile connected gaming,” said Gerard Wiener, Director and General Manager, Games, Nokia. “The N-Gage QD combines the best of phones and games which means it’s always with you when you need a quick fix of gaming. Our latest N-Gage titles provide great gaming experiences, whether it’s a four-player Bluetooth session of Snakes, or providing back-up for your friend’s Pathway to Glory platoon on the other side of the world through the N-Gage Arena.”

This new price point will allow select retailers like GameStop and Musicland to offer the N-Gage QD for $99.99 as a prepaid solution and potentially even less through operator channels depending on service contracts. The new pricing for N-Gage games also makes it easier for N-Gage fans to pick up the latest N-Gage titles at even more attractive prices. Wmode partnership opens up new mobile sales frontier

The launch of Dwango Wireless' top content brands will occur in 2005, as approved by specific carriers.

Billboard Mobile, a multimedia music discovery application tightly integrated with Billboard.com, will provide users access to music, charts and music news in a way never before seen in mobile.

Starting with the world-famous Billboard charts, which rank top music singles, albums and ringtones, users of Billboard Mobile will be able to access a wide range of information to help them find and download their favorite ringtones, purchase CDs and even find the location of a concert near their home town. Users can search and browse by genre,

artist, song or album name, venue or event. The search functionality is entirely intuitive, offering users multiple pathways to find what they are looking for. For example, if searching by artist name, the user will reach an artist’s page which includes access to ringtones for that artist plus pictures, news, tour dates, and reviews. Beyond ringtones, Billboard Mobile provides similarly easy discovery and purchase pathways to singles as well as full albums. Purchases are billed on the user’s monthly mobile phone invoice.
